How Innovative Technology Can Make A Difference In Schools
Most new, upcoming and updated technology aims to serve companies worldwide in order to improve their services and people’s understanding of the extent that they can do with these services. With technology in a continuous state of development, there will always be new skills to learn to not only understand the tech itself but to understand how to use it effectively.
Take coding, for example. Most of us know what it is and the extent of how vastly it can be used, but how many of us actually know howto use it? In 2014, this precise matter was addressed. Many companies found they were struggling to headhunt graduates who attained the sufficient coding skills required for their roles. Some of these companies, including Microsoft and Google, put their heads together with the British Computer Society (BCS) and the Royal Academy of Engineering to work alongside Michael Gove, the education secretary at the time, to look into inserting these skills into the schooling system, teaching children skills like how to code from a young age. With this being inserted into the curriculum, the belief was that children would grow up learning how to make a computer work for them instead of how to merely use a computer as the existing curriculum practised. This would, therefore, open up the potential for more graduates in the field, pushing the next generation to create the next innovative technology.
In January 2014, Michael Gove commented on the matter during a speech, stating that:
“ICT used to focus purely on computer literacy – teaching pupils, over and over again, how to word-process, how to work a spreadsheet, how to use programs already creaking into obsolescence; about as much use as teaching children to send a telex or travel in a zeppelin. Our new curriculum teaches children computer science, information technology and digital literacy: teaching them how to code and how to create their own programs; not just how to work a computer, but how a computer works and how to make it work for you.”
So, now that we know this approach to teaching children vital innovative technology skills has been proved possible and effective, we, at StemX, asked ourselves how we may be able to do the same. This is how we came up with our Junior Programme.
The Junior Programme is a programme founded and implemented by the co-founders of StemX, Diggory Simons and Dominic Chapman. Looking to launch later this year, we aim for the Junior Programme to allow for school children from all walks of life and financial situations to experience and understand how a job interview works from the perspective of new, upcoming technology. We are firm believers that when it comes to a job interview, practice makes ‘perfect’, so what better way to prepare the next generation than to put them into practice in a new, fun and accessible way?
We identified a large gap in the way children are taught to prepare for life after education, and one of the main issues is that they are not taught how to carry themselves in a job interview – let alone a video interview. How many of us now, as adults, are faced with the prospect of a video interview (which hasn’t been around in the industry for too many years) and have no idea how to approach it to our full potential? Imagine now, having reached our adult age and being faced with a video interview with the pre-existing knowledge and skills to carry one out effectively in order to gain straight up positive results. We believe that if schools implement the Junior Programme, individuals will grow up, learning to be familiar with this new style of interviewing, allowing them to not only exceed the employment barrier but to help them with college interviews, university interviews and general professional, interpersonal conversation skills.
The Junior Programme will always be completely free of charge, as we feel that learning new, important skills should not have a price. Each school that is involved with the Junior Programme will receive an extremely basic, child-friendly version of StemX with the capability to mimic interview style situations by asking questions, recording interviews and reviewing the videos. This will not only aid their chances of finding employment after education but also boost their self-confidence whilst they are still part of the education system. Using our innovative video interviewing technology, we will be able to bring endless opportunities to children that may not have been exposed to this level of support in this exact industry before.
